Today there is an excellent op-ed in the NYTs reminding us about the tragic
side of the Revolutionary War. Americans were the first insurgents and held in
horrible prison conditions in New York and on prison ships. More men died in these
prisons than died on the battlefields. The British said these men were insurgents
and not entitled to protection as prisoners of war. This was before there were
international treaties on treatment of prisoners of war. Our very own first
Americans were treated as we have treated the "enemy combatants" and insurgents
in Bush's GWOT. The precident existed before and our very own American history
comes from this precident. That the Republican congress members are "uncomfortable"
with the ruling last week by the Supreme COurt saying Geneva was law, underscores
how much they don't know about our own American history. It has taken the SCOTUS
to remind them of our own roots. I hope they will listen and pay attention. We
are not in new unchartered territory in terms of war and POWs. We are repeating
the mistakes of history, because we have leaders who seemed to have failed or
never studied history. This "King George" like the last one is making it up as
he goes along, because "he can." That's the reason Clinton said got him into the
"blue dress" debacle. Then he lied about it. It got him impeached. Seems like the
SCOTUS in the Hamden decision can see more clearly what is right and what is wrong
than the Republican members of congress. Now, if only the 4 extreme right justices
could see the difference as well. Their allegiance is to the constitution and
not the "crown" or the Federalist Society, who really seems to hate the Hamden
decision.

I have been to Fort Green and visited the Prison Ships Monument . It should be a holy site it is very sad to see. It needs alot of work .The last President that site was Taft.I think General Clark should talk about this site and make a comment about the conditions our Americam solders had to indure. My ancestors fought in the Battle of Long Island.

long before he was president. You are right about that for sure.

I think Wes should do this as well. Hard to believe nobody has done it since Taft. It's an important part of our history. They don't really teach about it in school.

This is very scary. In the late 1800s this was the horror in the Nation . For 75 years woman would collect the bones of the prisoners on the Brooklyn and Long Island shores. They are in a Cript at the Prison Ship Monument at Fort Green.I have been there it is very sad what we have done to them. They need to be honored. This is one of my projects as I apply for the Sons OF The Revolution.

That is shocking jdrake. I'm interested to know how you come along on your mission. Maybe you need to get someone like Darryl Hannah to sit in a tree until the media comes there to do a story in droves. It's mind boggling that this hasn't been done. I admire your initiative.

The Prison Ships Monument is a project in the works. Alot of people know that its a National problem. But no one stepes up to the plate. It will take about 15 million to fix this site.It is a Mass Grave. The bones of 11,500 Patrots are here. They are trying to raise money for it.It also needs arround the clock securty at Fort Green .
In the next 2 years will be Evacuation Day Nov 25 2008.The 225th annerversy the end of the American Revolution.I am Involved with the Liberty Pole Asso in New Utrecht Brooklyn for that event .This is a 223 year old active Flag pole.We fly the Betsy Ross Flag on Liberty Weekend once a year.It is some sight to see. That flag always finds wind.

It seems like it should be easy to raise $15 million in NYC. I know (at least I used to) the Newhouses. Has anyone approached their foundation? They are very interested in the arts and history. All it takes is writing a letter making the request and the family member who heads the foundation makes the decision on where the money goes. It's not a big process as I understand it. We have some wealthy people where I live that also have a similar type process who might donate from KC. We have the only WWI monument for the nation here. You can e-mail me at the addy here and I'm hapy to help you with addresses on where to send your letters for getting the money for this effort.

She is from Brooklyn. She needs a big national project like this and you should contact her about it.

Lets Fix and Honor the Past.We owe it to them. They were Patriots and died so horribly for a cause and an idea. They suffered so much to make us Free. The Prison Ship Martyr Monument at Fort Green Brooklyn must be rebuilt. It is the right thing to do.I have a old flyer on it and will make a call. The project should be a high profile I would think.I know they resently put a vistors center at the site.
How do I do an email?

when these prisoners were taken. Many, many, many of them from York and Lancaster Counties in Pennsylvania.
George Washington had the humanity to exclaim and agonize about the many fine soldiers he was losing at the Battle of Fort Washington.
George the III will never do anything to earn the millionth part of respect that was paid to George Washington and should never be addressed as the CIC because he hasn't earned the title.
