Iraq | Ireland | Kosovo | Martii Ahtisaari | Nobel Peace Prize | International

Congratulations to Martii Ahtisaari, a fine man who is truly deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.
He is respected and revered by the champions of peace and justice all over the world.
Mr Ahtisaari has been awarded honorary doctorates by 19 universities around the world and received UNESCO's peace prize earlier this month.
President Ahtisaari played a crucial role in the Irish Peace Process after being appointed to the International Commission on Decommissioning in 2000.
Behind the scenes (and not noted in current news stories), he has even been working for peaceful power sharing in Iraq via the "Helsinki Agreement" (as linked in this Kos diary I wrote over a year ago).
EU Special Envoy Ahtisaari also played a leading role in proposing independence for Kosovo.
"Blessed be the peacemakers," like Martii Ahtisaari.

while he works without fanfare in the background.
The Nobel Peace Prize has too often been awarded to the showboats and/or one-note media stars. This time it went to someone who really deserves it.

Wes Clark could still secure America as a national security candidate.
